Last year, Pope Benedict XVI wrote a letter of apology to Irish victims of priestly abuse. “You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry. I know that nothing can undo the wrong you have endured. I openly express the shame and remorse that we all feel.”
The Pope should be congratulated for finding remorse and having the courage to put it in writing. But, not so fast.
In light of the Vatican’s silence over the victims of the Rwandan genocide 17 years ago at the hands of Catholic Priests, the man who claims to be Christ’s Vicar on earth has fallen short of grace. The Pope’s resounding silence is very hurtful, to the faithful as well as victims of priestly wreckless abandon.
I will take sexual molestation over the mayhem and murder the Catholic Priests in Rwanda unleashed on their Parishes with impunity. Or is the Vatican’s conduct a statement of how they perceive white Irish lives versus Rwandan lives ?
The Vatican to this day continues to harbor Rwandan Catholic Priests on the run from justice. What are we to make of this ? Or is this yet another trivialization of the Rwandan genocide ?
To Benedict I say, Jesus Christ would shed tears over your cavalier attitude about the suffering of Rwandans.
