As the nation mourns the massacre of 20 children and 6 adults at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, debate is raging on where to go from here, and talk of stricter gun control is widespread.
If this senseless slaughter of innocent school children does not bring about new laws on the purchase and use of high-powered assault weapons, America is doomed.
Americans across this land mindlessly talk of their constitutional right to bear arms based on the Second Amendment to the U.S. constitution. But they ignore the carnage caused by deranged murderers that have caused untold horror on communities in the last couple of years. America has become the most dangerous country in the world, with the highest gun-related murders of any civilized country, not to mention the highest rate of prison population — 2 million, and growing.
The right to bear arms enshrined in the constitution does not guarantee anybody to purchase military style assault weapons, and this is not what the Founding Fathers had in mind. It is a right that was meant to guard against bad governance and tyrannical rule. This is not the case today.
When mentally challenged individuals can purchase guns as easily as purchasing candy, and the nation ignores the repeated killings of innocents in schools, malls and movie theaters, it is time to reassess our destiny and readjust our national compass.
Obama’s legacy may rest on what he does to solve this national crisis. Following his decisive victory in the last election, he certainly has the political mandate to arrest this scourge that threatens the foundation of this Republic. This is the least he can do, as a president, and a father of two young children.
If not now, when?
